Andrews See Giants

As part of the Father's Day celebration, three generations of Pattersons went to see the Giants play the Chicago Cubs at Candlestick Park. David Andrew Patterson, David Adam Patterson, Michael Andrew Patterson, and Andrew Solomon Patterson went on 6/19/1999 to see the Giant's last season before they move to their new ballpark in downtown San Francisco. First we had to stop because David, after having a fairly spicy lunch, was having some "stomach problems."

Both the Cubs and the Giants were in second place in their division, and both had star players. The Giant's Barry Bonds, whose Dad was also a Giant,  had been a Most Valuable Player of major leaguebaseball twice. Sammy Sosa of the Cubs chased Mark McGuire for the home run record in 1998, ending up with 67 home runs. If you look carefully, you can see the ball flying off Sosa' bat just below the Budweiser sign.

Andrew, who was 2 years and 2 months at the time, behaved very well in the stands. He sat with his Dad eating cotton candy or with his Uncle Dave,  and watched 3 innings without complaint. He did have a few more snacks, including Cracker Jacks and Chocolate Malts. As far as watching the game , he applauded with the crowd when everyone else cheered. His Grandfather then took him for an extended tour of the ballpark (or was it the other way around?), which circumnavigated Candlestick. (Its really called 3COM Park since 1996, after a a local high-tech company, to make some extra money for the city.) The trip took about 3 innings, wearing out Andrew and his body guard.

The game itself was high-scoring, if not beautifully played. The Cubs, who had many fans in the stands, had a rally in the sixth inning which led to 3 runs on 0 hits! Two errors by the Giant's infield and four walks by two Giant's pitchers was the closest that the Cubs came to a rally. (As Sosa ended up with no hits and just one walk, David wondered whether this year "Sosa" was Spanish for "Sucks".)

The final score was 11-5, and the Giants ended up sweeping the four game series from the Cubs the next day. (Note the tie-in to Sun Microsystems, which has played an important role in Pattersons lives.) The Cubs last World Series win was 1908, and it looks like the 20 Century will close without a Cub pennant. Wait until next century!

The following day was the real Fathers' Day. We added the girls to the group--Linda, Heather, and Grace--and started the day at Fat Apples for breakfast. The three oldest male Patterson then played soccer for two hours, followed by everyone going to see an animated movie. Tarzan was the first mvie were we paid for Andrew and he watched. Grace was also there, but she slept in the dark. Next we went to lunch at Chevys to eat and exchange gifts.

As David said "Eating, Soccer, Movies -- that's what Pattersons do!"

And as Linda said, when the given the choice of doing anything you want and you choose what you would normally do on a Sunday, then you know you have a pretty good life. We do.
